I read this as an audiobook and really enjoyed it。 I loved the magic and the problems the characters were facing。 。。。more

I wasn't sure if I was going to get around to this book in 2021。 There were a few false starts to getting my hands on the book, but it arrived in time to be my companion while waiting for my booster。 It was the perfect thing to distract me, sucking me into the magical world。

I really liked this book! I didn’t really have any issues with this except for the nightmares & the new moon。 Firstly, I feel like there was just sooooo much built upon these new moon nightmares。 I really expected there to more than one nightmare。 I would’ve like to have seen just more about them in general。 We really only witnessed once in the beginning part of a wardens daily job when Clem stepped into the little girl’s nightmare。 I read other reviews & I’m soooo glad I’m not the only one who I really liked this book! I don't even know where to begin to express how much I loved this book! Oh, how I wanted to love this book! I was hooked by the premise in the first few chapters - dueling magicians, nightmares that come to life, our main protagonists losing - but then after the initial setting the plot waned。 We were just getting to know a town before we were thrust into a big city with little world-building and personal connection。 The mythology behind the magic was interesting, but the magic overall was underdeveloped。 In fact, very little magic was used, even to defeat the night Oh, how I wanted to love this book! While the beginning felt forced, the characters shallow, and their motivations stilted, the plot and mystery caught me by the middle and I couldn't put it down。What I got in the end was a lovely little romance, a fascinating world, and a deep satisfaction for a great story。 While the beginning felt forced, the characters shallow, and their motivations stilted, the plot and mystery caught me by the middle and I couldn't put it down。What I got in the end was a lovely little romance, a fascinating world, and a deep satisfaction for a great story。 。。。more

I loved the concept of the book as a whole, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars。 The romance was tolerable, and while I liked Clem, she was kind of a massive idiot at times。 The plot was a bit convoluted, and many of the characters written rather shallowly。 I would have loved to delve more into Phelan's familial relationships because there's clearly a lot going on there, and honestly it felt like there were a lot of unresolved loose ends, but I want to reiterate again that I did really enjoy the I loved the concept of the book as a whole, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars。 The romance was tolerable, and while I liked Clem, she was kind of a massive idiot at times。 The plot was a bit convoluted, and many of the characters written rather shallowly。 I would have loved to delve more into Phelan's familial relationships because there's clearly a lot going on there, and honestly it felt like there were a lot of unresolved loose ends, but I want to reiterate again that I did really enjoy the book。 Could have used a little bit of a clean up is all。 。。。more

This was such a great book! I loved the concept and the world and there were so many subplots that once I thought I had everything figured out, I then learned I knew absolutely nothing that was going on。 Some of the plot twists were easy to see coming but were used as a distraction for other events later on that I didn't see coming at all。 I definitely recommend! I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 Our main character Celemtine is a 🎩 and her family also comes from magic。 Then suddenly 2 boys come into town to take over their magical status。 We got trolls, we got witches, we got a little romance 。 All in all, I would definitely put this on my top favorites of 2021。

Most of this book didn’t make sense。 2。5 stars for few lulls between action and Mazarine, who deserves her own book。

I originally bought this book in October or November because it was a hardcover and it was only $15 so I went into it with low expectations and the book definitely exceeded them。 Most other reviews say this is like the night circus and the cruel prince and though I have not read the night circus so I can’t speak for it it did remind me of the cruel prince (which was nice cause i enjoyed the cruel prince)。 Our main character, Clementine gives off so much Jude energy and I love it。 I swear I will I originally bought this book in October or November because it was a hardcover and it was only $15 so I went into it with low expectations and the book definitely exceeded them。 Most other reviews say this is like the night circus and the cruel prince and though I have not read the night circus so I can’t speak for it it did remind me of the cruel prince (which was nice cause i enjoyed the cruel prince)。 Our main character, Clementine gives off so much Jude energy and I love it。 I swear I will get on my knees for any morally Grey woman and Clementine is definitely that。 I also loved her dynamic with Phelan cause they were super cute together。 Like Phelan choosing her to be his partner because she almost killed him is iconic。 I also liked how you could tell that Phelan was falling for her throughout the book (this is mainly because I love it when men fall in love first)。 I almost forgot to talk about the plot twists! I did not see most of them coming which I always like in the book。 There were a few characters who I thought were good that were actually bad and characters who I thought were bad were actually good which just shows off the amazing writing of the author。 Any who I never know how to end these reviews so I’m just gonna say it was a great book and I recommend。 。。。more

I really loved the entire system of intrigue and lore throughout this book。 Also - maybe a tiny spoiler? - the concept of the stone heart was just so beautifully written。 A couple surprises and lots of lovely writing。 It's a standalone, but I found myself hoping (and even messaging the author!) for more within this world。 I really loved the entire system of intrigue and lore throughout this book。 Also - maybe a tiny spoiler? - the concept of the stone heart was just so beautifully written。 A couple surprises and lots of lovely writing。 It's a standalone, but I found myself hoping (and even messaging the author!) for more within this world。 。。。more

Reading the comments before I read the book, it did make me wary to read it。 People said all sorts of things about it like the plot being under developed。 I had gotten this book from Owlcrate and reading the premise of the story got me very excited。 Who doesn't love a magician? I will say the names were a bit weird, I kinda wish the names that were chosen had a reason behind it and that it was incorporated into the story。 I read a lot of Fantasy stories and there are times that I feel like ideas Reading the comments before I read the book, it did make me wary to read it。 People said all sorts of things about it like the plot being under developed。 I had gotten this book from Owlcrate and reading the premise of the story got me very excited。 Who doesn't love a magician? You don't want to know。 Is it worth it? Definitely。 Dreams Lie Beneath is a beautiful book。 I got an autographed copy with a blue hardcover and illustrated dust jacket, but the greatest part of all is the story in itself。 Rebecca Ross seamlessly weaves together the struggles and enigma of magicians within the world of Azenor。Clementine "Clem" Madigan is the protagonist (this name threw me off because there's a large-scale gardening chain store in this province called "Farmer Clem's", and the Clem mascot is male)。 Anyway, as the talented and gifted daughter of two mages, Clem has a lot of power, but when this is threatened by some possibly very dangerous opponents, Clem has to team up with an unlikely source to protect herself, her family and her hometown。 What she isn't aware of is that something much darker is lurking straight ahead。 Ross brings readers into a tangled web of not only fantasy, but also the sinister depths of a world doused in nightmares。Dreams Lie Beneath is often a long-winded book, with a great deal of world-building。 More plot-focused than character-focused, it won't be right for every reader, but fans of dark fantasy, romantic fantasy and even the mystery genre will find elements of everything they love in this book。 To the best of my knowledge, the generic version of Dreams Lie Beneath also has a pretty emerald green cover illustrated with a character on it, so every edition is a visual artwork, as well。 。。。more

Beautiful vocabulary and voice。 I loved the light steampunk/Bettlejuice vibe of the worldbuilding, and the slow-burn enemies to lovers was delicious。 One nitpicking critique on the dialogue is that the characters seemed to say each other’s names in almost every sentence, but I might not have noticed if I hadn’t listened to the audiobook。

4。5 starsWHAT I LOVED- This was an incredibly written book with a riveting plot, richly drawn characters I loved, a captivating and unique setting, interesting themes, and Ross's beautiful writing style to tie it all together。 - The characters were so good。 Clementine felt a lot like an ISTP。 She was a super interesting MC。 I think she was the first of Ross's characters to be that detached, logical, and rational, burying aside personal feelings to accomplish her goals, even if her goals stemmed 4。5 starsWHAT I LOVED- This was an incredibly written book with a riveting plot, richly drawn characters I loved, a captivating and unique setting, interesting themes, and Ross's beautiful writing style to tie it all together。 - The characters were so good。 Clementine felt a lot like an ISTP。 She was a super interesting MC。 I think she was the first of Ross's characters to be that detached, logical, and rational, burying aside personal feelings to accomplish her goals, even if her goals stemmed from personal feelings and values。 She started out as manipulative, wasn't afraid to do what she needed to get what she wanted。 Her character arc was really interesting。 (DLB was all in her POV。) And Phelan as a character I kinda absolutely LOVED。 He felt to me like something of an INTJ。。。 not afraid to scowl when he feels like it, mysterious, yet still polite。 (view spoiler)[Why do I SO love the part where he bows and says "Bravo, Miss Magidan" and he disappears。。。 lol?! It was SO AWESOME!!! (hide spoiler)]- The world of DLB was unique and memorable as the worlds in all her books I've read。 It kinda gave me (magical-) Victorian vibes。- Randomly, I loved the clothes the characters wore。 Like, top hats? I love it。- The FOOD descriptions!! Delicious。- I loved that there were times I silently screamed because of certain turns of events。- I have to mention again how much I love Ross's writing style! For basically all of the scenes, I could see it like a movie。 Ross has awesome metaphors and includes details that bring the setting and characters and everything to life。 SO lovely and poetic。- I loved the hate-to-love romance。 I thought it was amazingly crafted and felt natural and very much NOT forced, which was wonderful。 The emotional tipping point was so good (like where hate gives way to love)。 Especially with her。。。 ahem, condition, I was amazed at how real that change felt。 It almost made me cry at some parts! Cause she's trying not to feel, you know?! (More on the romance below, though。)- I loved the ending。 It was so thought-provoking and cool。WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE- The 4-star rating is just based on personal preferences, not because it was lacking in anything in how it was written; the magic was rather darker than in her other books, and even though it served a purpose and was well done, I would have preferred it to be less dark。 It wasn't enough for me not to finish it, but either way it was one of the reasons for this rating。- At times the romance personally felt like too much, even though it was clean。 The main instances I'm talking about are here (barely spoilers, but just in case): (view spoiler)[ C and P sleep in the same bed at times but don't touch, P helps C undress when she's wounded but stops before the chemise, C is briefly half-undressed with her back to P because of a wound, and then there are a few intense kisses (hide spoiler)] So definitely a PG-13 sort of book。 - One mild instance of language- So, apparently, a review on GR mentioned that two characters had a "sapphic" relationship, but I read the book and the friendship that I saw was technically just a friendship。 There was just holding hands and mention of living in the same house, which sounded common since they were magician-and-partner。 SLIGHT SPOILER: Even C and P lived in the same house because of that。 END SLIGHT SPOILER And if (please no) it WAS meant to be a "sapphic" relationship, well, it was too vague and impressionistic for it to be a big problem to me。 And if I had gotten really strong vibes in that direction, I probably wouldn't even have finished it。 That being said, I didn't like that it was vague enough for the assumption to be made that it WASN'T just a friendship。 Though I must say it was even literally called a friendship。 Anyway。。。OVERALLAgain, it was pretty incredible。 :)) Main personal downsides were the level of magic and the intensity of the romance。 。。。more
